Little Steven's Rock 'n' Roll High School
Meeting one of your heroes is one thing, getting a chance to work with them is another. Such was my great honor when I was given the opportunity to direct actor and E Street Band member, Steven Van Zandt in a series of short videos heralding his heartfelt belief that a proper music education in public schools is paramount to the success of its students.
Given the recent studies reviewing test scores (particularly in the area of mathematics) that have come out in strong support of that position, it's hard to argue to the contrary. But Mr. Van Zandt's advocacy doesn't stop with just music in general terms, he also believes that the history of rock and roll itself merits status as a credible and vital course subject.
Given its impact on society as a whole over the past 60 years, it's another point one would be foolish to argue.
So committed is Mr. Van Zandt to getting the course, "Rock 'n' Roll High School" into public schools, that he's created the non-profit Rock and Roll Forever Foundation as a vehicle to make it happen.
With the course still being created by a team of scholars, headed by former Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Vice President and musician in his own right, Dr. Warren Zanes, the PSA videos I directed were part of an initial clearing of the throat by Mr. Van Zandt. Long live rock 'n' roll!
